Film Review

I understand that this is the second in a series, and this is my first and only exposure to it, so I can't compare this to the original, nor the film made of it. The world is overrun by undead(apparently, people are still around, somehow... we just never see any of them). There are four hot, scantily clad girls around(that this pans up and down any chance it gets), all with Baneful Blood in them. Basically, they feel like killing(and they turn their attention towards the dead that walk), and whenever they are covered in the blood that sprays everywhere when you take out enemies(it even gets on the camera lens), they Rampage(there's a meter letting you know how close you are to this; the same goes for how much blood is on your weapon, and it will get stuck inside your foes if it gets completely covered... shake it to clean it). They change colors to darker(their skin basically goes black), they move faster and do more damage, but they are also lose defense and their life gradually decreases... to the point where they'll die if you don't stop it using an item or a Goddess Statue(...don't ask, I have no clue) or complete the level. The 4(who all have a sword about twice the size of their body, and use it the same way... you swing it by flicking the Wii-Mote... it can chop apart anything you come across(and sending someone into someone else harms them both), and even a set of legs can get back up and come at you(very black knight)... with that said, they are far too pacifistic, they are hardly ever a threat to you, and on the whole, this doesn't challenge you; you can tell what difficulty setting you're playing this on without having a hard time with either); they can also kick, using the Nun-Chuk, to break the guard of, and/or stagger, others; in fights, you mainly control the timing, it doesn't always matter what direction you do a motion in; all of them have an alternate mode of attacking) are the half-sisters of Aya(who has a second blade and can throw knives) and Saki(who, when she isn't getting drunk on herself, can beat up and use awesome wrestling manoeuvres against opponents... these are easy to do and take a second from start to finish; in general, this is straightforward and you can get into it instantly), and the two you unlock by completing this as the two aforementioned: the assassin Reiko(who has a shotgun and an SMG with infinite ammo(as long as you reload... and that doesn't always work properly), that you aim by using the Pointer... and this is kind of awkward, it bounces, and sometimes, if she is facing you, she won't shoot where you tell her to), and the demented Misery(whose fencing instrument is made up of segments attached by a chain that is apparently also an elastic, improving her reach and power at the cost of speed, when she switches to using that). At first, this is enjoyable enough. Then you realize how repetitive it is. They have a storyline each, and you do get details of how it all happened... they do contradict one another, though, and they're essentially the same. There are 8 chapters to them, and they are the same areas(they do swap where you spawn and where you have to go some), and you fight the other three chicks, and really, the order is about the sole difference between them. You go from point A to B, you slay zombies along the way(you aren't required to do that with all of them... the majority you can run right past if you wish; at times, an iron fence will rise out of the ground(as the foes do often), trapping you until you've rid it of them), that's it. When you complete something, you can try it in Free Play and Survival Mode as well, where you can complete Quests. In those, you can choose 2 to use, and you can be joined by a friend on split-screen. The tiny, minimalist manual barely tells you anything... this does instruct you, however. Graphics are reasonable, at least for the console. Animations are smooth. This doesn't build an atmosphere, because the elements contradict one another. While the city, hospital and cemetery(OK, that last one would be; you also go to a forest and an underground cave) look abandoned, it's not like in Resident Evil(where there's clearly been combat) or Silent Hill(where it's like all life *vanished*)... it isn't creepy or scary. It's too normal. The AI is OK... at times, often with the infected birds, they will "move in place", and bosses will act like a corner of the arena is their nemesis. By pressing and holding Z, you can strafe, walk(not run... like the song), you get to use a couple of other strikes, allow you to evade(you can't block; time a dodge exactly right, and you can counter) and engage Target Lock(this won't always work, for some reason), and is quite useful. The score has fast electric guitars, and is otherwise techno. It's decent. You earn XP and can upgrade abilities. This seems scared you'll be bored... you can even slice apart the loading screen, and any dialog or exposition(both spoken in Japanese, and written or subtitled in English) can be skipped or fast-forwarded through, respectively. Honestly, if you(like me) want a great beat-'em-up game that is as over the top gory, violent and bloody as this, go for Madworld. The music is better, it sets and maintains a mood and it's actually immersive, you don't feel like a spectator who only impacts the timing and it is satisfying. It doesn't have as many babes, and it feels some need to justify and excuse itself... still, on the whole, it is definitely the superior game. I recommend this to big fans of non-committal action gaming, and I'd go for a rental if I were you. 6/10
